40,000 Iraq security personnel to protect pilgrims

Iraq's security forces have deployed 40,000 officers and soldiers along the main routes leading to the southern holy city of Karbala a day after a roadside bomb killed two pilgrims.
Najaf police chief Maj. Gen. Abdul-Karim Mustafa said Monday that Iraq's security forces would offer protection along the main processional routes for Shiite pilgrims who have frequently been targeted by extremists.
The pilgrimage marks the end of 40 days of mourning following Ashoura, the anniversary of the seventh century death of Imam Hussein, a grandson of Prophet Muhammed.
