Military support for Iran pres raises controversy

A reformist cleric in Iran has attacked a top military commander for openly supporting incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the upcoming presidential election.
Mahdi Karroubi, who's a potential candidate for the June 12 vote, says the military has been banned from siding with political groups or intervening in elections.
His comments came Wednesday in the newspaper controlled by his political party.
He was reacting to comments Tuesday by the Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces, Gen. Hasan Firouzabadi, who said Ahmadinejad's reformist opponents won't stop the hardline president from winning re-election.
The election is being closely watched to see if a reformist wins and starts a new relationship with the outside world.
