David Ortiz starts training in DR for Classic

Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz started training here Monday hoping to play in the World Baseball Classic for his Caribbean homeland later this year.
The 33-year-old Dominican native said his personal doctor had assured him that he has recovered fully from a wrist injury that sidelined him for 45 games in June and July.
"The hand feels well, the inflammation has gone away and the doctor saw that everything was good," Ortiz told The Associated Press at the Mets' camp in Boca Chica to prepare for the tournament.
Ortiz was on the disabled list twice last season with a partially torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. He hit .264 with 23 home runs and 89 RBIs in 109 games, all lows for him since he joined the Red Sox in 2003.
Baseball officials in the Dominican Republic said training will last three weeks. Ortiz arrived in the Caribbean country over the weekend.
