TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Legislative Yuan passed a resolution Thursday in the provisional session that the Control Yuan no longer supplies car for every commissioner beginning this year. The act is regarded as a lesson given to the Control Yuan for its “arrogant” attitude.

Only this case, out of 109 proposals made by the opposition party, has won support from the ruling party and gets passed. Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker Kuan Bi-ling (管碧玲) said that the cancellation of car supply reflects the public opinion of disapproval to recent actions of the Control Yuan.

The DPP made the proposal to cut carbon emission and save energy, said DPP lawmaker Wang Hsing-nan (王幸男), and they did not expect to gain support from the Kuomingtang.

When the proposal got passed yesterday, a rare harmony was prevalent in the Legislature, with lawmakers from both camps applauding the result.

The resolution agrees to cancel personal car supply for Control Yuan commissioners and use overall coordination instead. A car and a driver will be dispatched to member of the top government watchdog when necessary, without providing every commissioner with an individual vehicle. But the resolution will not slash any Control Yuan budgets.

The Control Yuan came under fire for its split attitudes toward recent impeachments. Control Yuan President Wang Chien-shien (王建煊) made investigation personally and proposed the impeachment to former DPP officials Chiou I-jen (邱義仁) and James Huang (黃志芳) in the Papua New Guinea diplomatic scandal, while its members voted not to make public the details concerning the impeachment to KMT Taichung County Magistrate Kuang Li-chen (鄺麗貞) for neglect of duty.

The Control Yuan was urged to use a uniform standard in case handling and not to create an impression of “being harsh to opposition group but lenient to ruling camp”.
