Three suspects in the alleged hate-crime gang rape of a lesbian in Northern California have pleaded not guilty and are likely to remain jailed until a judge decides whether there is enough evidence to put them on trial.
Lawyers for 31-year-old Humberto Hernandez Salvador, 21-year-old Josue Gonzalez and 16-year-old Darrell Hodges entered the pleas Thursday to charges of kidnapping, carjacking, gang rape and sodomy in the Dec. 13 attack in Richmond.
Salvador also was charged with committing a hate crime, and his lawyer said he was also pleading not guilty to that.
Authorities say the woman was taunted for being a lesbian.
The suspects' bails range from $1.9 million to $2.2 million. Their next court date is in March.
