Red Cross condemns shelling of Gaza hospital

The Red Cross movement on Thursday condemned the shelling of a Gaza hospital by Israeli forces.
The damage caused to the Al Quds hospital in Gaza City was "completely and utterly unacceptable based on every known standard of international humanitarian law," the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said in a statement.
Israeli officials said the incident was being investigated.
The Geneva-based federation said the second floor of the hospital took a direct hit that caused fires in the pharmacy and severe damage in many parts of the building.
Its sister organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross, said the shelling put the lives of some 100 patients and medical staff at risk.
An official at the Israeli mission in Geneva said an investigation has been opened into the circumstances of the incident.
"Israel is only fighting against Hamas terrorists and infrastructure," Karen Smadja told The Associated Press. "Hamas is using the civilian Palestinian population as human shields."
