UK aims to ease court trauma for rape victims

Britain's solicitor general Vera Baird says new laws could make it easier for rape victims to testify against their alleged attackers.
She says plans set out in proposed new justice laws would see current procedures overhauled in a bid to increase the number of successful prosecutions over sexual assaults.
Baird says prosecutors would be able to use initial police interviews with victims about an alleged attack as evidence in court cases, sparing victims the often traumatic experience of recounting their ordeal in a court setting.
She told lawmakers Thursday that the reforms are aimed at encouraging more victims of rape to come forward. She says that the government estimates only a third of victims make a complaint to police.
