Russian convicted of murdering Chechen released

A Russian military officer who killed a Chechen woman has been released from prison before the end of his 10-year sentence, a penitentiary official said Thursday.
Col. Yuri Budanov was convicted in 2003 of murdering 18-year-old Heda Kungayeva. He said he strangled her in a fit of rage, believing her to be a rebel sniper.
His case has been closely watched as a test of authorities' determination to deal with rights abuses in Chechnya, but there have been few similar prosecutions.
Last week, a court granted Budanov early release for good behavior. The ruling angered Chechens and rights activists.
Budanov has been released and "is home," said Yevgeny Nezvanov, a spokesman for federal penitentiaries in the Volga River city of Ulyanovsk.
Chechnya's ombudsman Nurdi Nukhadjiyev said Budanov's release showed an "utter disrespect" to thousands of Chechens who protested it, the Interfax news agency reported.
