Luis Ko, CEO of the Imei Environmental Protection Foundation, signed an agreement with Tainan Mayor Hsu Tain-tsair yesterday at the Tainan City Government Building, calling for the beautification of the courtyard of the Confucius Temple in Tainan.
The government and foundation will work closely together to maintain and develop the grounds around the ancient temple, they said, with a particular focus on saving the century-old banyan trees, so that the courtyard will be available as a source of cultural enrichment and beauty to future generations.
Mayor Hsu, who also serves as Director of the Tainan Confucius Temple Management Committee, noted that no one can put a value on life, including the life of trees, and the Tainan City Government wants to show its concern for the trees by treating them for several diseases. He thanked the Imei Environmental Protection Foundation for its pledge to undertake the preservation of the trees and noted that this was a prime example of how private and public organizations can work together to achieve noble ends.
The Confucius Temple is a Class 1 Historic Site with a number of ancient trees in its compound which require care and treatment by specialized personnel, which can be a time-consuming and expensive. This is particularly true for the large trees in front of the Main Hall of the temple. They were recently found to be suffering from brown root disease, and no funds were available for their treatment. This led to pleas from several different organizations to the city government to care for the trees.
The Imei Environmental Protection Foundation is dedicated to the protection and care of the environment and heritage sites of Tainan City. It has taken on the task of preserving the trees in the courtyard of the Tainan Confucius Temple and treating their diseases and ailments.
Ko explained that once the diseases have been treated, the job of maintaining the trees will be entrusted to the Department of Horticulture of National Chung Hsing University, under the guidance of Dr. Liu Tung-chi, who holds a license as a tree doctor in Japan. Their efforts will help to ensure the health and well-being of these venerable century-old banyan trees.
