Nominee facing US Senate, admits past errors

Eric Holder is bracing for a Republican grilling in what is shaping up to be a contentious confirmation hearing on his way to becoming the first African-American U.S. attorney general.
Republicans see the hearing as their best forum for showing that as a minority party, they are still relevant. Holder sought to head off some of that criticism by picking retired Sen. John Warner to introduce him to the Senate. Warner is a popular, well-known Republican.
Democratic Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy called for Holder's swift confirmation. Arlen Specter, the top Republican on the committee, signaled that Holder would face some resistance but stopped short of saying Republicans would oppose him.
