Former FBI official to fight gangs in St Kitts

The Caribbean nation of St. Kitts and Nevis has hired a former FBI official to help fight gang activity on the islands.
Prime Minister Denzil Douglas says former FBI assistant director Mark Mershon knows gang culture intimately and has a record of bringing criminals to justice in the United States.
Mershon is a 30-year veteran of the FBI who was put in charge of the New York office in 2005. Wednesday's announcement said he has joined the Caribbean nation's Ministry of National Security. The announcement did not provide details.
The murder rate climbed from 17 to 23 last year in St. Kitts and Nevis, a twin-island federation of nearly 40,000 people. Last month, the country staged its first hanging in a decade.
