Kinmen, Xiamen to stage Chinese New Year fireworks displays

Taipei, Jan. 15 (CNA) Fireworks displays are slated to be staged simultaneously on the Taiwan-held Kinmen Island and in nearby Xiamen City in China's Fujian Province Jan. 26 in celebration of the arrival of the Chinese Lunar New Year, Kinmen Tourism Bureau officials said Thursday.
The displays are seen as a mark of warmer ties between Taiwan and China since the Kuomintang administration took office May 20 last year.
The displays will be staged from 8:00 p.m. to 8: 30 p.m. Jan. 26 at the mouth of a river in Shanglin village in Xiaokinmen Island -- one of the islets of the Kinmen group -- and in the Huangcuo area of Xiamen City, according to the officials.
The Kinmen display will be paid for with funds provided by an association of Taiwanese businessmen based in Xiamen and was approved by the Kinmen county government a day earlier.
According to the contractors organizing the Kinmen display, it is expected to be more spectacular than any other ever staged on the island, with 1,000 fireworks to be ignited.
