Inspired by late son, professor devotes himself to philanthropy

Taipei, Jan. 15 (CNA) A local professor said Wednesday that he has found surprising solace in helping impoverished children in foreign countries since his son died of leukemia five years ago.
"I am now not only the father of a pair of my own children, but also that of four children from four different countries, " said Cheng Wen-hui, a professor of the Department of Non-Profit Organization Management at Chiayi County-based Nan-Hua University, while proudly displaying letters of gratitude sent to him by the foreign children.
Cheng began his philanthropy after the death of his son by providing financial aid to four children in Honduras, Bosnia, South Africa and Thailand through a sponsorship program operated by World Vision Taiwan.
At the beginning of this year, he sent season's greetings to the children and subsequently received their letters to show their gratitude in response.
Cheng said he felt happy to have the opportunity to spread his love to more people and to "pay back society." He said his decision to join the sponsorship program was inspired by his son, who had been enthusiastic in taking part in charity runs before he was diagnosed with leukemia in 2002 and died two years later.
Describing his son as "an angel sent by God" because he always gave love and warmth to people around him, Chen said he would like to follow in his son's footsteps by helping more people in need.
