Travelers warned not to bring meat-based products into UK

Taipei, Jan 15 (CNA) Taiwanese citizens are advised against bringing any meat-based products, including instant noodles and moon cakes made with lard, into the United Kingdom, according to a recent statement issued by The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
Citing a release by the UK's revenue and customs department last December, the MOFA's Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) said that it is against British law to bring any kind of meat into the country -- whether it is fresh, dried, cured, cooked, frozen, powdered, canned, or vacuum packed -- from outside the European Union.
The ban also applies to all milk based products, according to the statement. It added that violators could face prosecution or a fine, and the illegal products will be confiscated and destroyed by the UK customs.
According to the release, the regulations have been introduced to prevent the importation of diseases, such as bird flu and foot and mouth disease, via food products.
