Sudan opposition leader detained

Sudanese authorities detained a prominent opposition leader who urged the country's president to surrender to an international court to face charges of genocide in Darfur, his son said Thursday.
Siddique Turabi said security agents came to the family's home just before midnight Wednesday and asked Hassan Turabi to come with them. An aide of Turabi, Bashir Adam Rahma, was also taken for questioning from his home, the son said.
The 75-year old leader's whereabouts remain unknown.
"The security officer, very politely, asked him to come with them," Siddique Turabi told The Associated Press. "I think this is related to my father's comments about the International Criminal Court."
The leader of the Popular National Congress Party, Turabi, had said President Omar al-Bashir should give himself up to the Hague-based court to save Sudan from internal strife and more turmoil.
The ICC prosecutor has asked for an arrest warrant against al-Bashir. A decision is expected soon.
There was no immediate government comment on Turabi's detention. However, the independent daily Akhbar al-Youm quotes what it described as "an authoritative source"_ a common reference to security officials _ as saying Turabi was arrested "in connection with the statements he has made supporting the ICC against the President of the Republic."
Once an ally of al-Bashir, Turabi fell out with the president and now heads the main opposition party. Since he was ousted from the ruling party, Turabi has been in and out of prison a few times.
Al-Bashir's party accused Turabi of backing a Darfur rebel attack on the capital last year, and briefly detained him.
Turabi's comments were a first in Sudan, where no one has openly suggested al-Bashir hand himself in to the ICC even though some former rivals have said the president should "deal" with the court's accusations.
The government outright rejects the ICC and any charges against al-Bashir and has recently started rallying all Sudanese in support of the president.
