Large quake hits South Pacific off New Caledonia

The U.S. Geological Service says a magnitude 6.8 earthquake has hit waters in the South Pacific off the French territory of New Caledonia.
It is unclear whether there are any injuries or damage caused by the quake.
The U.S. body says the quake hit at 0727 GMT on Thursday. The epicenter was about 100 miles (160 kilometers) off of Ile Hunter in New Caledonia, and more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from Auckland, New Zealand.
No other information was immediately available.
