Taipei, Jan. 15 (CNA) Taiwan's share prices plunged Thursday, with the Taiwan stock exchange's weighted index, the market's key barometer, falling 200.7 points, or 4.43 percent, to close at 4,320.77.
The local bourse opened at 4,350.49 and fluctuated between 4,351.47 and 4,315.62.
A total of 2.90 billion shares changed hands on market turnover of NT$54.2 billion (US$1.63 billion).
All eight major stock categories lost ground, with banking and financial stocks falling the most at 5.98 percent, textile shares dropping 4.98 percent, construction issues losing 4.92 percent, plastics and chemicals issues losing 4.5 percent, machinery and electronics stocks falling 4.1 percent, cement stocks shedding 3.8 percent, paper and pulp issues moving down 3.61 percent, and foodstuff stocks falling 2.6 percent.
Losers outnumbered gainers 1,531 to 134, with 85 stocks remaining unchanged.
Foreign investors were net sellers of shares worth NT$14.61 billion.
