Israeli diplomat heads to US to talk Gaza truce

The director of Israel's foreign ministry is on his way to Washington to discuss the international efforts to end the fighting in the Gaza Strip.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor says the talks will focus on a possible American role in helping secure the porous border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip. The Hamas militant group smuggle weapons into Gaza through underground tunnels.
Israel says a halt in smuggling must be part of any cease-fire deal. Palmor says it's not clear what role the U.S. might play in securing the border, though it's possible the Americans could provide technology.
He says director Aharon Abromovich will discuss the matter with diplomats and congressional officials.
More than 1,000 Palestinians have died in a two-week Israeli offensive in Gaza.
