Israel lifts suspension of league matches

The Israel Football Association has decided to allow most league games to be played this weekend, after extending the winter break due to the fighting in Gaza.
IFA Chairman Avi Luzon said last week that it "would not be right" to allow games to be played while rockets are falling on the south of Israel, and last weekend's entire schedule of league games was postponed.
But following a special secretariat meeting at the IFA headquarters in a Tel Aviv suburb on Tuesday, Luzon said he had changed his mind.
"We feel that after a week's postponement it is time to go back and play," he said. "We can't let our enemies completely disrupt the game we all love so much and which acts as a refuge for so many of us."
The ruling will allow only the top three divisions to play league games this weekend. Any teams based within 40 kilometers of the Gaza Strip _ in rocket range of Gaza militants _ will play in alternative locations due to security concerns.
The IFA also announced that games between Arab and Jewish clubs to be hosted by Arab sides in northern Israel will be played elsewhere as there are concerns over possible violent demonstrations.
Israel launched a Gaza offensive aimed at halting rocket fire by Hamas on Dec. 27, and heavy fighting has continued since then.
