Albania sets parliamentary election date in June

President Bamir Topi says Albania will hold parliamentary elections on June 28.
More than 2 million people are eligible to take part in the ballot choosing 140 lawmakers for a four-year term.
Topi on Wednesday announced the date for the country's seventh parliamentary polls. They will be the first held after Albania adopted a new electoral code based more heavily on regional political preferences.
Elections in post-communist Albania have always had serious shortcomings, and the upcoming poll will be major test for the Balkan country's government and political institutions.
The ballot's success is crucial to Albania's bid to join NATO this year. Albania also may apply for candidate status with the European Union.
