Lippi: 'I decide if Totti returns'

Italy coach Marcello Lippi gave a lukewarm response Wednesday to the prospect of Francesco Totti returning to play for the national team.
"The availability of Francesco Totti to return to the national team is certainly a display of great earnestness, but I'm the one who decides," Lippi said Wednesday.
Lippi said he had read recent statements from the AS Roma captain in Italian media stating that he was open to a return.
Totti announced in July 2007 that he was retiring from the national team. He has not appeared for the Azzurri since the 2006 World Cup, when he hurried back from extensive leg surgery to help the team to victory.
At 32, he has become increasingly more injury prone and is currently out with a leg muscle problem. Totti also had an injury-filled 2008.
He began last year by tearing a leg muscle on March 29, then tore his right knee ACL on April 19, had surgery and missed the end of last season. In his first official game back _ the Italian Super Cup on Aug. 24 _ he was forced out again with a bruise.
Lippi also appeared to send a signal that he was no longer interested in Juventus striker Amauri, who was born in Brazil but is in the process of obtaining Italian citizenship.
"We have enough Italian players whose worth is not up for discussion," Lippi told the ANSA news agency. "Let's not go looking for players with dual passports."
