President cheers up troops ahead of Chinese New Year

Taipei, Jan. 14 (CNA) Braving low temperatures of minus 5 degrees Celsius, President Ma Ying-jeou traveled deep into the mountains of central Taiwan Wednesday to cheer up military troops stationed at one of the highest military posts in the nation.
Ma, accompanied by National Security Council Secretary-General Su Chi and Minister of National Defense Chen Chao-min, paid a visit to a military post on Mt. Siaosyue, which is responsible mainly for monitoring the situation in the Taiwan Strait.
Ma then proceeded to the nearby Mt. Hehuan, where he greeted troops who are undertaking winter training.
After the trips to the mountains, Ma visited the Songshan Command Headquarters near Taipei City around noon and had lunch with troops stationed there.
In his capacity as commander-in-chief of the Republic of China's Armed Forces, Ma exhorted the soldiers to be ready and prepared at their respective posts so as to allow the country to have a secure and peaceful Chinese New Year holiday, which begins Jan. 25 this year.
