Italy urges Brazil to reverse decision on fugitive

Italy wants Brazil to reconsider a decision allowing an imprisoned leftist Italian fugitive to remain in Brazil.
Foreign Minister Franco Frattini expressed "surprise and great regret" that Brazil's Justice Ministry blocked Cesare Battisti's extradition to Italy over fears of persecution.
Frattini says in a statement Wednesday that he urged Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to push for a reversal of the decision. Brazil's Supreme Court will have the final say on whether Battisti is extradited.
Battisti is wanted in connection with four killings in the 1970s. He escaped from an Italian prison in 1981 and was convicted in absentia and sentenced to life in prison for two of the killings. He has not been tried for the two others.
