Mexican police prosecuted for migrant extortion

Three municipal policemen and two accomplices have been ordered to stand trial in central Mexico for allegedly kidnapping a group of Central American migrants to extort money from their relatives.
The officers are from the town of Rafael Lara de Grajales, where residents staged an uprising against police to help the migrants escape in October.
The suspects face organized crime and kidnapping charges punishable by up to 50 years in prison.
Federal prosecutors said Tuesday the migrants were riding U.S.-bound trains when they were kidnapped.
Tens of thousands of Central American migrants pass through Mexico every year on their way to the U.S., but many are robbed, beaten or raped by bandits or by Mexican officials.
