Brazil recommends naming Italian fugitive refugee

Brazil's justice minister has recommended political refugee status for an imprisoned leftist Italian fugitive accused in 4 killings.
Justice Minister Tarso Genro made the recommendation for Cesare Battisti because of the possibility of persecution if he is extradited to Italy.
Genro's decision announced late Tuesday by his ministry goes against a decision in November by the ministry's National Committee for Refugees. Brazil's Supreme Court will have the final say on Battisti's extradition.
Battisti escaped from an Italian prison in 1981 while awaiting trial on four counts of murder allegedly committed when he was a member of the Armed Proletarians for Communism. He fled to France, where he reinvented himself as a mystery writer.
