Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has backed captain Steven Gerrard publicly after being charged with assault and affray following a bar brawl.
Benitez described Gerrard as a "nice person" as he returned to training Wednesday for the first time since the incident.
Benitez says "Steven explained to me what had happened and I told him he has my full support and backing, along with everyone else at the football club."
Benitez says Gerrard is "keen now to focus solely on his football."
The England midfielder faces up to five years in prison if he is convicted over the brawl that took place early Monday morning in Southport and left the bar's disc jockey with facial injuries.
