Over 1,600 cartons of foreign cigarettes nabbed off Chiayi County

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) A total of 1,651 cartons of contraband foreign cigarettes with a market value of over NT$20 million (US$610,000) were nabbed by police Wednesday off the port of Budai in southern Taiwan's Chiayi County, according to Kaohsiung Harbor police.
Eleven crewmen, including five foreign nationals -- one from Myanmar and four from Indonesia -- were detained along with the contraband that had been transferred at sea off the coast of eastern Taiwan's Hualien County from a fishing boat to a gravel vessel based out of Kaohsiung County, the police said.
Kaohsiung Port police officers and their colleagues at Budai found the smuggled cigarettes concealed in the bottom deck of the gravel ship in a pre-dawn raid while the contraband goods were being unloaded from the vessel to a waiting truck, police said.
It was the first time that a gravel vessel had been caught smuggling contraband into Taiwan, police said, adding that the crewmen were trying to cover the cigarettes with gravel in the truck when apprehended. The truck driver was also taken in to help with the probe, the police said.
The case was referred to the Kaohsiung Prosecutors Office for further investigation.
