Unemployment climbs to 10.8 percent in Colombia

Colombia's unemployment rate rose to 10.8 percent in November as the world financial crisis slowed economic growth.
The national statistics office says joblessness increased from 10.1 percent in October, and from 9.4 percent in the same period of 2007.
A Tuesday report from the office said 2.1 million Colombians couldn't find work, while 17.3 million were employed in farm and non-farm jobs.
About a third of the population, or 14 million people, are under age 14.
Economic growth slowed to 3.1 percent in the third quarter from 6.2 percent in the year-ago period as the world financial crisis tightened credit and slowed demand for Colombian oil, coal, nickel and other exports in its top market, the United States.
