The White House says President Bush has consulted by telephone with Palestinian leaders, including Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority.
Spokesman Gordon Johndroe told reporters in Crawford, Texas, that Bush had talked to Abbas early Tuesday and that Bush had a briefing by videoconference with top aides on the continuing violence in the Mideast.
Johndroe also said Bush called Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to thank him for his role in trying to stop the violence. And the spokesman said that Bush and Abbas agreed in their conversation that for any new cease-fire to be effective, "it must be respected, especially by Hamas."
