Group sues to block restrictive adoption law

A civil liberties group has filed a lawsuit seeking to strike down a new law barring unmarried couples from becoming foster or adoptive parents.
Proponents of the law say it is aimed primarily at keeping gays from becoming foster or adoptive parents.
The American Civil Liberties Union sued on behalf of 29 adults and children from more than a dozen families. The law is to take effect Thursday.
The ACLU said Tuesday that among the plaintiffs is a grandmother who lives with her same-sex partner of nine years and is the only relative able and willing to adopt her grandchild, who is now in Arkansas' state care.
More than 56 percent of voters in November supported the ban.
