MOE launches 'Host Taiwan' program for foreign students

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) The Ministry of Education (MOE) announced Tuesday that a program to train host families will begin next year with the aim of offering foreign students a deeper cultural experience and improving the country's international image.
With more and more foreign students coming to Taiwan, the MOE said, it has set up a system, in collaboration with non-profit organizations, to prepare host families to provide foreign students with a friendlier environment in which to learn Mandarin and to become familiar with the local customs and culture.
Local families with regular incomes, willing to provide free accommodation to foreign students for a short period, and enthusiastic about cultural exchanges are eligible to apply for participation in the "Host Taiwan" program.
The families should be capable of providing adequate accommodation and at least one member of each applying household must speak a foreign language.
The host applicants must be recommended by a public or private school or a non-profit organization, such as a church or Rotary Club.
The foreign students will have fewer expenses while studying in Taiwan, while the host families will also benefit from the arrangement, according to the MOE.
Next year, 1,000 host families are expected to enroll in the program, said Deputy Education Minister Lu Mu-lin at a press conference.
Ted Liang, a Rotary Club member who has hosted four foreign students so far, said hosting young people from different countries helped his own children to gain the concept of a global village, to express themselves better and to develop other interests apart from their studies.
"Hosting foreign students and having contact with other cultures changed the way we educate our children, " Liang said, adding that this type of exchange is also a form of citizen diplomacy.
