China names ambassador to SE Asian association

China has appointed an ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said Xue Hanqin will help promote communication and coordination between China and the 10-nation bloc.
Xue was formerly ambassador to the Netherlands and director-general of the Foreign Ministry's department of treaty and law. Qin said Tuesday that for now, her post is not permanent.
Earlier this month, ASEAN signed a charter making the organization a legal entity for the first time and paving the way for a single market within seven years.
Until now, the group has been little more than a talk shop, forging agreements through consensus and steering away from confrontation.
