Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) Taiwan's share prices surged Tuesday, with the weighted index, the market's key barometer, moving up 172.88 points to close at 4,589.04. Rebounding from losses the previous day, the local bourse opened at its low of 4,463.3, and rose as high as 4,602.21 during the trading session.
A total of 3.19 billion shares changed hands on market turnover of NT$50.47 billion (US$1.54 billion).
All eight major stock categories gained ground, with banking and financial shares gaining the most at 6.03 percent. Cement stocks increased 5.72 percent, construction issues advanced 4.89 percent, machinery and electronics shares rose 3.96 percent, plastics and chemicals shares gained 3.04 percent, textile stocks increased 2.93 percent, paper and pulp issues were up 2.46 percent, and foodstuff issues advanced 2.18 percent.
Gainers outnumbered losers 1,461 to 146, with 176 stocks remaining unchanged.
Foreign investors were net buyers of shares worth NT$5.32 billion.
