Taipei shares close down 0.20 percent

Taiwan share prices closed down 0.20 percent in quiet trade yesterday with many investors keeping to the sidelines ahead of the New Year holiday, dealers said.
The weighted index fell 8.92 points to 4,416.16. Losers led gainers by 973 to 460 with 331 unchanged.
The market opened flat as foreign institutional investors stayed away over the festive period and moved in a narrow range amid lingering concerns over the global economic meltdown, dealers said.
"Daily turnover continued to shrink, showing investors preferred to stay at bay instead of jumping into the trading floor on a lack of clues at the moment," Grand Cathay Securities analyst Mars Hsu said.
Daily turnover fell further to NT$23.64 billion (US$716 million) from Friday's NT$29.92 billion.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co fell 0.12 percent to NT$43.35 and United Microelectronics Corp lost 0.42 percent to NT$7.07. MediaTek shed 2.06 percent to NT$214.00 and Hon Hai Precision closed down 0.49 percent to NT$61.20.
Chang Hwa Commercial closed unchanged at NT$12.20 but Chinatrust Financial rose 0.76 percent to NT$13.30. Taiwan Cement closed unchanged at NT$25.05 and Far Eastern Textile was flat at NT$20.35.
