III launches MEC and offers Moblin technology service

Commissioned by the Department of Industrial Technology of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the Institute for Information Industry (III) launched the Moblin Enabling Center (MEC) on December 23 in an official ceremony attended by Institute President Ke Jyh-sheng, Department Deputy Director General Wu Ming-ji, and Intel Corporation Taiwan Branch General Manager Jason Chen.
The MEC will provide Moblin technology services, in the hope of accelerating domestic development of the latest Mobile Internet Device (MID) and other related services, and developing Taiwan as one of the key centers for global mobile computing.
To assist software, hardware manufacturers and content providers in creating blue ocean market, Economic Minister Yiin Chii-ming signed with Intel Corporation President and CEO Paul Otellini a Memorandum of Understanding on October 30, 2008, both agreeing to cooperate in Moblin software platform technology required by Netbooks and MIDs.
In his speech, Deputy Director General Wu said in confidence that the MEC is able to help businesses innovate product designs, create new value for software and expand new market for Taiwan's industry.
President Ke also emphasized that services provided by the MEC included system integration, driver development and porting, software porting, and Moblin verification, all of which are requirements of Netbooks and MIDs.
