The latest craze to hit Taiwan's elementary schools is learning English by staying at a "language village"- a formula originating in South Korea.
Taoyuan County is the host of Taiwan's first three English villages, where fifth-graders get the chance to practice their English in a real-life context, as if they were really sightseeing and shopping overseas.
The formula of a one-day trip in combination with specially selected foreign teachers and specially designed courses has been attracting attention from beyond Taoyuan County's borders.
The three-day courses for winter and summer vacations in 2008 were fully booked, and the county's English-language villages were invited to participate in several exhibitions about creativity and teaching throughout Taiwan.
The three villages have already taught more than 60,000 students and welcomed more than 6,000 interested visitors. Apart from continuing to organize one-day study trips, the villages will design more programs for weekends, and for summer and winter holidays.
