Taiwan court sends former president back to jail

A Taiwan court says it has ordered former President Chen Shui-bian back to jail, pending his trial on corruption charges.
The Taipei District Court says it has accepted prosecutors' arguments that the former leader has to be locked up to prevent him from fleeing the island.
Chen was taken back to Tucheng detention center in suburban Taipei early Tuesday.
The action followed a 12-hour court hearing. It reverses a previous decision that Chen could remain free while preparations for his trial go forward.
Chen was indicted earlier this month on charges of money laundering and accepting bribes during his recently concluded eight-year presidential tenure.
He spent 32 days in Tucheng following his arrest Nov. 12.
