Israeli minister to meet with Sarkozy in Paris

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni will meet in Paris with President Nicolas Sarkozy in early January, part of a French push to help end the end the crisis between Israel and Hamas that includes an EU ministerial meeting Tuesday.
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner invited his European counterparts to a Tuesday evening meeting on the crisis, "given the gravity of recent events," said a ministry statement announcing the gathering.
A presidential statement said Sarkozy and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak discussed the situation by telephone and will continue their conversations in the days ahead.
The president's office did not specify the date of the Israeli foreign minister's Paris visit beyond saying that Sarkozy and Livni would meet in the French capital at the beginning of January.
The announcements came on the third day of an Israeli assault on Gaza where the Palestinian Hamas organization rules. More than 300 people have been killed.
Paris' efforts to seek a solution correspond with France's final days at the helm of the European Union's rotating presidency. The Foreign Ministry statement noted that France had the agreement of the Czech Republic, which takes over the EU on Jan. 1, to call the ministerial meeting Tuesday night.
The ministers will discuss linking an EU contribution with other international efforts, particularly the United Nations, the statement said.
