Overstaying Tibetans to be granted temporary residence

Taipei, Dec.29 (CNA) About 110 Tibetan people who overstayed their visas will be granted temporary alien residence certificates early next year, the National Immigration Agency (NIA) said in a statement Monday.
According to the statement, the NIA decided to offer overstaying Tibetans temporary residence certificates after working with the Cabinet-level Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission (MTAC) in helping them resolve their current difficulties out of human rights consideration.
The NIA previously granted similar temporary residence permits to overstaying Thai and Myanmar students from the Golden Triangle who are descendants of former Kuomintang troops and have not been given citizenship of their respective countries of residence.
As of Monday, 107 Tibetans -- 79 males and 28 females, including three children born to Tibetan couples in Taiwan -- had completed the registration process with the NIA for temporary residence certificates.
The NIA is scheduled to issue the certificates Jan. 9, with the MTAC distributing those certificates to Tibetans on behalf of the NIA, the statement said.
