Poor, underprivileged eligible for health insurance fee subsidies

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) The Bureau of National Health Insurance will launch a program in 2009 to subsidize the health insurance premiums of the poor and the disadvantaged, including low-income foreign spouses of Taiwan nationals.
Bureau officials revealed Monday that the health agency has obtained funds of NT$280 million (US$8.5 million) from a special Public Welfare Lottery fund for the disadvantaged to finance the program.
The government hopes the program will help those with financial woes or family difficulties avoid worrying about seeking or paying for health care, the officials said.
Those with household incomes less than 1.5 times the legally recognized standard for minimum living expenses, families whose main income earner has died or is suffering from a severe illness, or the handicapped, will all be eligible far partial subsidization of their insurance premiums and emergency care.
The plan will also cover transportation expenses for those living in remote mountainous areas and outlying islands who need care in facilities that are not close to where they live, the bureau said.
