China ties recent bomber to July bus blasts

Chinese police have blamed a bus bombing that raised fears of terrorism ahead of the Beijing Olympics on a man who planted a bomb in a coffee bar in a southwestern city last week, state media reported Monday.
The explosions on two public buses in Kunming came less than three weeks before the opening of the games and raised concerns that the Olympics would inspire violent attacks in even usually peaceful parts of the country. The government later ruled out any link between the two.
Two people were killed and 14 wounded in the bus explosions. No one was arrested.
But then, on Dec. 24, a bomber was killed while attempting to plant a bomb in a Kunming coffee bar. There were no other casualties.
The China Daily reported Monday that DNA and other evidence linked to the bomber _ who carried explosives in his backpack _ to the bus explosions.
Kunming, which is the capital of Yunnan province, is 1,300 miles (2,090 kilometers) southwest of Beijing and is not generally considered a restive area.
