Ronaldo practices with ball for the first time

An overweight Ronaldo practiced with a ball for the first time on Sunday since joining Brazil's Corinthians, hoping to be fit enough to make his debut early in the new year.
Ronaldo's main goal remains losing the "five or six" kilograms (11 to 13 pounds) he gained during the nearly 10 months of inactivity prompted by his latest knee injury, but on Sunday he was allowed to take part in his first ball drills with Corinthians.
He still hasn't been able to join his teammates on the practice field, but was able to kick the ball around inside the club's gym. He kicked the ball into a wall several times and did not appear to feel any pain, according to local media.
Ronaldo, who signed a one-year contract with Brazil's most popular club two weeks ago, began training for the first time on Friday.
Corinthians is trying to set up a friendly match against Argentina's Boca Juniors in early January for Ronaldo's first match, but it remained unclear when the striker will be fit to play.
He may not even be able to play in Corinthians' first match of the season on Jan. 21 against Barueri in the Sao Paulo state championship.
A four-time national champion, Corinthians is returning to the Brazilian league's top flight in 2009 after spending a year in the second division.
Ronaldo ruptured a tendon in his left knee while playing for AC Milan in February, the third major knee injury of his career.
Corinthians coach Mano Menezes admitted on Saturday that the arrival of a star such as Ronaldo will prompt changes to the way he coaches the team. He said he will try to learn from National Basketball League coach Phil Jackson, who talked about how he managed Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan in the book "Sacred Hoops."
"The book says that in the beginning everybody only worried about observing Jordan and forgot to play their own game," Menezes said. "The same thing may happen here. We will try to make his arrival as natural as possible. The earlier we do that, the faster we will reach the results we want."
