An anti-violence group has placed 16,000 coconuts on Copacabana beach to represent the number of murders in Rio de Janeiro state over the past two years.
Antonio Carlos Costa is director of the non-governmental organization Rio de Paz, or Rio of Peace.
He said Saturday that the coconuts represent the skulls of those who have fallen victim over the past 20 months to the persistent violence afflicting Rio de Janeiro and other parts of the state.
Rio is one of the most violent cities in Brazil, which registered 48,000 murders last year.
