Adamek wins IBF cruiserweight title

Poland's Tomasz Adamek knocked down champion Steve Cunningham three times and won a 12-round split decision to take the IBF cruiserweight title late Thursday.
Adamek knocked down Cunningham in the second, fourth and eighth rounds.
Adamek (36-1) had winning scores from judges John Stewart (116-110) and Shafeeq Rashada (1151-112), while Clark Sammartino scored it 114-112 for Cunningham (21-2).
The Jersey City-based Adamek _ greeted by chants of "Polska! Polska!" _ floored Cunningham in the closing seconds of the second round with a thunderous right uppercut. Referee Earl Morton allowed Cunningham to continue after a standing eight count.
"The first time he went down, I knew that I had hurt him," Adamek said. "Cunningham is a tough fighter, but I think my style hurt him. My style was the difference."
The fourth round featured nonstop action. It started with Cunningham unleashing a series of 21 straight punches, leaving the challenger virtually defenseless and staggering. But Adamek recovered and landed a left jab, followed by a hard right that put the Philadelphia fighter to the canvas with 15.8 seconds left in the round.
"I thought I had him in the fourth," Cunningham said. "So I went for the knockout and he caught me. It ended up costing me the fight. That's boxing."
Adamek put Cunningham down again in the eighth with a right cross, then survived hard blows from Cunningham in the ninth and 12th rounds to hold on for the win.
In an earlier bout on the card, Joseph Agbeko of Ghana earned a 12-round majority decision over William Gonzalez of Nicaragua to retain the IBF bantamweight title.
