Scolari seeks striker in January transfer window

Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari wants a striker during the January transfer window despite chief executive Peter Kenyon earlier ruling out any signings.
Scolari said on Friday he needed a striker due to a spate of recent injuries to key players including forward Didier Drogba, who was out for several weeks and was now suspended, Michael Essien and Joe Cole.
Chelsea, which will be at Bolton on Saturday, dropped to second behind Liverpool in the English Premier League after a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal last weekend.
"For the game against Arsenal, I lost two strikers in (Franco) Di Santo and Didier and I had only (Nicolas) Anelka" Scolari said. "For the game tomorrow I have only Anelka."
Scolari concedes that Chelsea's transfer strategy has changed since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's takeover five years ago sparked a spending spree, but the Brazilian coach has been speaking to the board about his transfer targets.
"I know that it's a different time for Chelsea, but if I have more injuries they understand that I'll need one or two players as replacements," Scolari said. "If the players stay in good condition, and there's no more injuries, I think we'll need only one replacement player."
Chief executive Peter Kenyon said this week he doubted there would be players on the market good enough for Chelsea.
"Traditionally we've never done a lot in January and this January is no exception," Kenyon said. "Short-term fixes are not really what works for a club like Chelsea. I think we'll see little or no activity because the players we would like to bring in are probably not available."
Chelsea said there are no disagreements between Scolari and Kenyon, who are discussing the injury situation as it evolves.
