Bisphenol A may be listed potentially toxic substance in Taiwan

Taipei, Dec. 5 (CNA) The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) is planning to officially list bisphenol A (BPA) as a potentially toxic substance in light of increased public concern that it may pose a health risk to humans, especially infants, an official said Friday.
After BPA is listed as a potentially toxic substance, manufacturers that use the chemical in their products will be required to file a declaration with the EPA, according to Wu Wen-chuan, deputy chief of the EPA's Department of Environmental Sanitation and Toxic Substance Management.
BPA has been placed on an EPA watch list since 2007.
The chemical is commonly found in certain hard plastic products, including polycarbonate (PC) baby bottles. It is thought to be an endocrine disruptor and has been proven harmful to animals in laboratory experiments, raising concerns that it could cause negative health effects in humans.
With health concerns over BPA increasing worldwide in recent years, Canada announced in April this year its intention to ban the import and sale of PC bottles containing BPA, making it the first country in the world to take action on the chemical, Wu pointed out.
While Japan has placed BPA on its list of possible endocrine disruptors, the United States has required the manufacturers, importers and processors of BPA-made products to submit related information to authorities, Wu said.
The European Union, meanwhile, has set a limit of 30 ppb for BPA emissions, Wu said.
According to Wu, as the metabolic systems of infants and young children are not as developed as adults, BPA consumption is likely to affect their reproductive system.
There have not been any reports of such incidents in Taiwan.
As BPA has not been banned in containers for baby use, Wu urged the public to avoid putting high-temperature liquids in these containers and discard containers that have cracked to reduce the risk that the chemical has been released into the food or beverage being consumed.
