Schalke's general manager says players lack desire

Schalke's general manager has criticized his players for having a lack of desire after two straight losses that all but ruled the team out of the Bundesliga title race.
Schalke lost 2-1 to 10-man Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday and has dropped to seventh in the standings, eight points behind Leverkusen and Hoffenheim. In the previous round, Schalke lost 2-1 at home to Bayern Munich, despite dominating much of the game.
"The team has plenty of potential," Schalke's general manager Andreas Mueller said Sunday during a panel discussion on the DSF television channel. "We could see that against Bayern. ... But what's missing is the bite, the ultimate will to win. The players have to lose that mentality. I think the coach has to remove the protective shield he's put around the players. Sometimes you have to kick them in the behind."
He said some Schalke players could not get rid of the frustration of missing out on the title in some recent seasons. Schalke has not won the championship in five decades.
Schalke's Dutch coach Fred Rutten also lamented his team's poor performance.
"The way we played, we are not a top club," he said.
