Udinese, Sampdoria, Napoli advance in Italian Cup

Udinese defeated Reggina in a penalty shootout to advance to the quarterfinals of the Italian Cup on Wednesday.
After a scoreless 120 minutes, Udinese won the shootout 8-7 after Reggina midfielder Luca Tognozzi missed in the 10th round of penalties.
Udinese played a man down from the 88th minute when goalkeeper Emanuele Belardi was red-carded over a disputed play in which Reggina striker Djordje Rakic fell while advancing on goal. Midfielder Emil Hallfredsson shot over the crossbar. Hallfredsson also missed his penalty in the shootout.
Udinese was reduced to nine men when Fabio Quagliarella was ejected with two minutes left in extra time.
Udinese is tied for fifth in the Serie A, three points behind league leader Inter Milan, but could not break through the defense of last-place Reggina, which has managed just five points in the season's first 11 games. The teams meet again on Sunday in a league match.
In the quarterfinals, Udinese will play Sampdoria, which defeated Serie B's Empoli 2-1 on two first-half goals. Emiliano Bonazzoli scored in the 37th minute with Bruno Fornaroli converting a penalty in injury time to make it 2-0. Francesco Lodi got one back for Empoli, which was demoted to Serie B at the end of last season.
Also, Napoli defeated Salernitana 3-1. Napoli went ahead on a Salernitana own-goal and then received scores from Inacio Pia and Marek Hamsik on a penalty. Napoli will play either Juventus or Catania, which meet on Jan. 14.
In other games in this round of the Italian Cup, it's: AC Milan vs. Lazio; Fiorentina vs. Torino; AS Roma vs. Bologna; and Inter vs. Genoa.
