TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Mainland Affairs Council Chairwoman Lai Hsing-yuan (賴幸媛) met with Chen Yunlin (陳雲林), Chairman of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait, yesterday afternoon. She emphasized her official title of MAC Chairwoman in her address. However, Chen only used “you” and “Head of China Affairs” to address her, in contrast with the first meeting last June when Straits Exchange Foundation President Chiang Pin-kun (江丙坤) addressed Wang Yi (王毅), director of the Taiwan Affairs Office, as “Director Wang”.

ARATS arranged for Chiang to meet Wang Yi during the first Chiang-Chen talks. In the second round of talks this time, the SEF also arranged for Chen to meet Lai based on the principle of reciprocity.

In her address, Lai first stated her official title. She said that since she had assumed the post of “MLA Chairwoman”, she understood that cross-strait exchanges could open new opportunities. Two rounds of talks in less than five months had demonstrated to the world the willingness of Taiwan and China to put their disputes aside and improve their relationship.

Chen noted in his speech that cross-strait relations, like rowing a boat against a current, moved backward if there is no forward progress. He added that many cross-strait affairs should be dealt with as soon as possible, especially those concerning the health and benefits of the people.

When talking about the impact of the global financial storm, Chen said to Lai, “You are an expert in foreign trade and a key figure in Taiwan’s economic development. If time allows, I hope to ask your opinions on economy.” Chen failed to mention Lai’s official title throughout the meeting.

During the evening feast held by KMT honorary Chairman Lien Chan (連戰) in Chen’s honor last night, Chen also skillfully avoided official titles by using the term “older generation in Taiwan’s political circles” instead of “President Wang” to address Wang Jin-pyng (王金平), President of the Legislative Yuan. His appellation cleverly encompassed all city mayors, county magistrates, and lawmakers present.

Chen is set to meet with Wang again this morning. Wang said that while he hoped Chen could address him with his official title and also call President Ma Ying-jeou “President Ma” when the two met, it was more important to inform Chen of the Taiwanese people’s opinions in their breakfast meeting.
