French consumer confidence falls in October

French consumer confidence slumped in October amid the continuing global financial crisis.
The consumer confidence index fell three points from September, returning to the 12-month low hit in July after a brief uptick in September. It was the biggest monthly drop in the confidence reading since June.
The index, based on a survey conducted by France's national statistics agency INSEE, showed more consumers were putting off making major purchases and more were worried about losing their jobs in October than a month earlier.
